HLR lookup

Querying mobile operators' register to check whether a number is active, without placing a call.

The HLR (Home Location Register) is the mobile operators' database. An HLR lookup checks that a number is assigned and reachable, and reveals the carrier and sometimes porting. It is, for phone, the equivalent of SMTP verification for email.

It lets you clean a list of numbers before a call or SMS campaign by removing inactive ones. It says nothing about the owner, only the line's status.
